The First Language

The Conversation Begins

When someone comes to sit with me, I begin by listening the body.

The body is a master communicator.

Long before we learn to speak, the body is already expressing the fullness of our experience. It communicates through breath, movement, sensation, posture, gesture, sound, and emotion. Even when words cannot yet tell the story, the body is speaking. It is continually revealing our relationship with life from the inside out.

As I listen the body, I am also listening the heart.

The heart carries a different kind of intelligence.

The body tells the story of what has been lived.

The heart reveals what is asking to become.

Every session begins by entering the conversation they are already having.

Our First Language

Most of us were never taught to listen this way.

We became fluent in words while slowly forgetting the language that came before them.

Yet the body has never forgotten.

Before we could explain hunger, we cried.

Before we could describe fear, we startled.

Before we could ask for comfort, we reached.

Before we could name joy, our whole body lit up.

Movement was communication.

Emotion was communication.

Relationship began through the body's ability to express what it needed in order to live.

This is our first language.

It has never disappeared.

It has simply become quieter beneath everything we have learned to say.

The Wisdom of Emotion

Over the years, listening hundreds of bodies has taught me something profound.

Emotions are living cycles.

Every emotional experience begins in relationship with life.

Something happens.

The body responds.

Emotion arises.

Movement begins.

Expression unfolds.

Integration follows.

Every emotion carries within it the wisdom of its own completion.

The body does not simply contain emotion. It participates in its transformation.

Every system joins in this extraordinary work.

The breath participates.

The nervous system participates.

The muscles participate.

The fascia participates.

The heart participates.

In the language of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the organs also participate, each contributing their own intelligence to the movement and transformation of emotional life.

The body is a living ecology.

An extraordinary community continually tending life.

The Wisdom of Containment

There are moments when an experience arrives with more intensity than we can fully receive.

The body recognizes this immediately.

Without asking permission, it begins caring for the experience.

It gathers around what feels tender.

It protects what feels vulnerable.

It lovingly holds what cannot yet move.

This, too, is part of the wisdom of emotion.

Containment belongs to the cycle.

Just as the womb holds new life.

Just as the seed rests within its shell.

Just as the chrysalis surrounds transformation already underway.

The body understands that every movement has its own season.

Where the Movement Pauses

As life continues, our relationship with our emotions begins shaping how those cycles unfold.

Some emotions find space to move.

Others meet fear.

Some meet shame.

Some become tangled in the expectations we place upon ourselves.

Some become intertwined with the roles we learned to play in order to belong, to stay safe, or to be loved.

The circuitry of the emotional cycle becomes interrupted.

The movement pauses.

The body continues tending what has not yet reached completion.

This is often the place from which healing begins.

People come to me carrying an anxiety they cannot explain.

A grief they cannot access.

An anger that feels overwhelming.

A fatigue that seems to have no clear origin.

The body is still communicating.

It is simply speaking a language that has been waiting for someone to hear.

Restoring Relationship

Our work together begins by restoring relationship.

Relationship with sensation.

Relationship with breath.

Relationship with emotion.

Relationship with the quiet intelligence of the heart.

As relationship deepens, the body begins offering new possibilities.

Sometimes through tears.

Sometimes through warmth.

Sometimes through a spontaneous breath.

Sometimes through the first honest expression of anger a person has ever allowed themselves to feel.

This is why our work is intentionally slow.

The body recognizes experiences that words alone cannot provide.

Healing unfolds through relationship.

As the relationship changes, the emotional cycle begins finding its rhythm again.

Movement returns.

Expression follows.

Integration becomes possible.

Between Our Sessions

People often ask me what they can do between our sessions.

I have come to cherish that question.

Every body speaks a different language.

Every heart reveals its own doorway.

The invitation is always the same.

Remain in relationship.

One person may light a candle and speak into the flame.

Another may place a hand over the heart and simply listen.

Another may walk slowly beneath the trees.

Another may breathe with a place in the body that has been asking for attention.

Another may practice a qigong movement, make a healing sound, or gently push against a wall until the body remembers its own strength.

These are gestures of relationship.

Each one quietly tells the body,

"I am here."

"I am listening."

"You no longer have to carry this alone."

Over time, the body begins recognizing something it has long been waiting to experience.

There is enough safety for the movement to continue.

Returning to Our First Language

The body remembers.

The heart remembers.

Life remembers.

The movement continues.

Perhaps healing has always begun here.

Listening the body.

Trusting the wisdom of the heart.

Creating the conditions where emotion can continue the cycle it has always known.

A cycle of movement.

Expression.

Completion.

Integration.

Perhaps healing is nothing more than remembering our first language.
